Synopsis
In 1327, Sir Roger Mortimer returns from exile at the head of an army. Once the King's loyal servant, now his enemy, he removes Edward II from the throne and rules England in his place. To some, he is a national hero; averting civil war and ending the tyranny of the King's favourite, Hugh Despenser, but others regard him as the greatest traitor of all, stealing not only a kingdom but also their queen, Isabella. While Mortimer flaunts his restored wealth and power, rumours begin to circulate about his involvement in Edward's death and royalist supporters gather to plot the downfall of the man who would be king.

Edward II
England is hurtling toward disaster. The worst weather in living memory has resulted in widespread flooding, ruined harvests and rising prices. The people are suffering but their ruler is deaf to protest, embarking instead on unpopular military campaigns, neglecting foreign policy and ignoring the advice of parliament. Any who oppose him find their property confiscated and their titles withdrawn. Civil war seems inevitable. Someone has to make a stand.

Isabella
The queen's once contented marriage is being threatened by her husband's close friendship with the jealous and avaricious Hugh Despenser. When relations with France deteriorate, Isabella finds that she is regarded as an enemy of the state. Her income is slashed, her children removed from her care and she is threatened with divorce. It seems Isabella's only refuge is with her brother, the King of France, but while in Paris, she meets the exiled Mortimer. Both want to return to England in safety. Separately, this is impossible. Together, they may have a chance.
